4G LTE on Wheels Among Automotive Highlights at CES

The collaboration between the top carrier and GM's OnStar navigation and communication division would allow streaming content for all vehicle occupants, including cloud-based entertainment, video chat and browsing for passengers. Entertainment features are limited to the rear seats to avoid driver distraction.
OnStar showed off the features in a demonstration model of Chevrolet Volt, GM's hybrid electric vehicle.
Drawing a lesson from the success of Google's and Apple's mobile operating systems, largely driven by the availability of now hundreds of thousands of available applications, OnStar has called on independent developers to submit apps for its platform.
The 2012 International CES, which runs through Friday, is increasingly taking on elements of a car show, as partnerships to spiff up the dashboard and cabins increase. In 2010, CES kicked off with a presentation by Ford CEO Alan Mulally about partnerships with Microsoft and Sony to not only feature enhanced navigation and satellite radio, but also Web surfing and downloading, enabled when the car is in park. Microsoft developed the FordSync entertainment system.
"Ever since Ford showcased that they were seeing massive demand for FordSync, everyone and their brother is trying to lead with technology," said technology consultant Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group. "I made the [Audi] A7 [luxury sedan] with the Nvidia-based media system my product of the year for last year."
This year the trend is only more intense. Ford, Korean-based Hyundai and Mercedes Benz USA with Daimler AG will have keynote presentations, focusing on greener energy consumption, connectivity and the growing use of apps.
